However, you are the person enlisted to ensure that reception runs smoothly, effectively and efficiently - guaranteeing that every person who phones or comes in to the office feels welcome.
What is the definition of a receptionist?
A receptionist is one who answers the phone, greets clients in person, does
25 things at once, and is always being interrupted!

Many businesses are opting for an automated system to answer their calls. Nevertheless, being greeted by a real living being is still the preferred outcome for most callers. Large service corporations who receive thousands of calls each day offer options for callers to select the person or department they wish to speak to - the only solution for such a volume of calls.
However, in most cases, companies addressing the busy-ness of their reception are ill-advised to install a system to take calls initially. Far better is a system where calls put through to extensions by the receptionist are picked up by a message service if the staff member is not able to take the call. This allows the caller to leave a detailed message if need be; takes the onus off the receptionist if the call is not returned; and frees up the receptionist to handle other calls and greet people in person with an exceptionally good attitude at all times.
